Why Study in Germany?

Germany charges no tuition fee at its public universities — for Indian students as much as for German ones. Across 400+ state-recognised institutions offering roughly 20,000 study programmes, what you pay each term is a semester contribution of €150–€350, which usually bundles in a local transport pass. The one exception is the state of Baden-Württemberg, which charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester.

Key Takeaways

  • No tuition fee at public universities; semester contribution of €150–€350 covers administration and often local transport
  • Baden-Württemberg is the exception — €1,500 per semester for non-EU students
  • 400+ state-recognised institutions and around 20,000 study programmes
  • 18-month post-study residence permit to look for work after graduating

Intakes and Deadlines

The winter intake starting in September/October is the main one and carries the widest choice of programmes. A smaller summer intake starts in March/April, and many courses simply do not open for it. Application deadlines commonly fall around 15 July for winter and 15 January for summer, but they vary by university — check each one.

Work Rights and Costs on the Ground

Graduates receive an 18-month residence permit to seek work after finishing their degree. During study, the standard allowance is 140 full days or 280 half days of work per year.

Germany Student Visa — What Actually Matters

The blocked account (Sperrkonto) is mandatory for the student visa. For 2026 the amount is €11,904 for the year, released to you at €992 per month. This figure is tied to the German BAföG rate and is revised every year or two, so confirm the current amount before you deposit. Without a blocking confirmation (Sperrbestätigung), the visa is refused.

Public or Private — Which Route Is Yours?

Germany's public universities charge no tuition, and that is the fact most students arrive with. It is true, but it is only half the picture. Public universities admit directly, are highly competitive, and frequently require German-language ability — they do not work through consultants, which is why you will not find them in the list above.

The institutions we represent are private and applied-sciences universities. They charge tuition, typically in the region of €10,000–€15,000 a year, and in exchange offer English-taught programmes, intakes more than once a year, and admissions criteria that do not hinge on a top-percentile school record. For many students that is the realistic route into Germany; for others, a public university is worth the extra preparation.

We will tell you which of the two your profile actually fits. If a public university is the better answer for you, we will say so, even though it is not the route we place students through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is studying in Germany really free for Indian students?

Public universities charge no tuition fee, so the teaching itself is free. You still pay a semester contribution of €150–€350 and must show €11,904 in a blocked account for the visa. Baden-Württemberg is the one state that charges non-EU students, at €1,500 per semester.

How much money do I need in a blocked account for Germany in 2026?

€11,904 for one year, which is released to you at €992 per month. The amount follows the German BAföG rate and is revised every year or two, so confirm it before depositing.

Which intake should I apply for in Germany?

The winter intake beginning in September/October is the main one and has the widest programme choice. The summer intake in March/April is smaller and many courses do not open for it.
