Study Permit: What Changed, and What You Now Need
Two changes matter more than anything else on this page.
The Student Direct Stream closed on 8 November 2024. Every Indian applicant now goes through the Regular Stream, with processing of 8 to 12 weeks. If you are working from a guide that still describes SDS and its 20-day turnaround, that guide is out of date and the timeline it gives you is wrong.
From January 2026 a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) is required from the province where your institution sits — for undergraduate and diploma applicants. Master's and PhD applicants at public universities are exempt. You cannot apply for the permit without it if it applies to you.
