UK Student Visa: What Actually Decides Approval
Three requirements account for most UK student visa refusals, and none of them are about your grades.
The 28-day rule
You must hold the full required amount — outstanding tuition plus maintenance — for 28 consecutive days, and the closing balance date must be no more than one month before you apply. Money that arrives in the account late, or dips below the threshold for even a day inside that window, restarts the clock. This is the most common avoidable refusal.
Your CAS
The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is issued by your university and is valid for six months. You cannot apply without it, and the details on it must match your documents exactly.
Maintenance funds
You must show living costs at a set monthly rate for up to nine months, on top of your outstanding first-year tuition. These rates were revised recently and published figures currently disagree with each other, so take the amount from the official gov.uk student visa page on the day you calculate it rather than from any guide, this one included. Being short by even a small margin is a refusal, not a query.
Visa fee
From 8 April 2026 the student visa application fee is £558, up from £524. The Immigration Health Surcharge is charged separately and is not included in that figure.
